A nearby Medicare agent should offer more than a nearby address
When you search for a Medicare agent near you, you are probably not looking for someone to read a brochure. You want a person who can look at your doctors, prescriptions, budget, travel, and timing, then explain the tradeoffs in plain English.
Local knowledge helps, especially when provider networks change by county. But the quality of the process matters more than the distance from your house.
What a Medicare agent should review
A careful Medicare review should cover:
- Your Medicare Part A and Part B effective dates
- Current employer, retiree, COBRA, VA, TRICARE, Medicaid, or Marketplace
coverage
- Doctors, specialists, hospitals, and pharmacies
- Every regular prescription, including dosage and frequency
- Expected dental, vision, hearing, and travel needs
- Monthly budget and the amount of medical cost uncertainty you are comfortable
carrying
- Whether you have a protected right to buy a Medicare Supplement policy
If the conversation starts with one company or one plan before those questions are answered, slow it down.
Ask whether the agent is independent
An independent agent may represent multiple insurance companies. That does not mean every agent represents every plan available in your county. Ask which companies and plan types the agent can discuss, and whether there are options outside the agent’s contracts that you should know about.
Michael will tell you which companies and plan types he can represent and will put the available options side by side with you. If you prefer to begin on your own, you can also search plans in your area through Michael’s secure plan finder, then call him before you enroll so the doctors, prescriptions, and costs can be checked together.
Questions worth asking before you enroll
- Why does this option fit my situation better than the alternative?
- Are all of my doctors in network, and how was that verified?
- Are my prescriptions covered at my preferred pharmacy?
- What could I pay in a heavy medical year?
- Does this choice make it harder to buy a Medicare Supplement later?
- What happens if I spend part of the year outside Kentucky?
- Who helps me after enrollment if a problem comes up?
The last question matters. Enrollment is one day. Your coverage lasts all year.
